2011 NATIONAL SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK LOCAL POSTER CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED

02/02/2011

KILLINGTON, Vt. (February 2, 2011) – Killington Resort and Pico Mountain announce winners of the National Safety Awareness Week’s Poster Contest for local elementary students. With over 95 entries from area 4th and 5th graders, Best Overall Safety Message was awarded to Ryan Mahoney, age 10, from Castleton Elementary School with Alec Peyton, age 10, from Sherburne Elementary as Runner-Up. Most Creative Design was presented to Rachele Riecker, age 10, from Castleton Elementary School with Savannah Malosky, age 10, as Runner-Up and also from Castleton Elementary.

Each of the winners and runners-up received gift cards to Killington Sports as well as entry into the NSAA’s Safety Poster Contest at the national level.

National Ski Areas Association sponsors National Safety Awareness Week (Jan 15-21, 2011) in order to promote snowsport safety awareness and education. The Poster Contest invites kids to create posters illustrating a point of Your Responsibility Code – the seven rules of slope safety - or a point of SmartStyle – four elements that help explain the use and progression of freestyle terrain at mountain resorts.

Your Responsibility Code
1. Stay in control.
2. People ahead have the right of way.
3. Stop in a safe place for you and others.
4. When starting downhill or merging, look uphill and yield.
5. Use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
6. Observe signs and warnings and keep off closed trails.
7. Know how to use the lifts safely.

Smart Style
Make a Plan:
Every time you use freestyle terrain, make a plan for each feature you want to use. Your speed, approach and take off will directly affect your maneuver and landing.
Look Before You Leap: Scope around the jumps first, not over them. Know the landings are clear and clear yourself out of the landing area.
Easy Style It: Start small and work your way up.
Respect Gets Respect: From the lift line through the parks.
