Killington Athlete Spotlight: Joe Swensson, Ski Cross
Posted March 22, 2013
Joe Swensson grew up in Niantic, CT, but his heart has been in Vermont since skis were placed on the bottom of his feet at age two. At the young age of six, Joe had his heart set on freestyle skiing with a focus on moguls. Whether it was fate or not, because of his age, Joe’s only option was to join the Alpine Racing Program at Killington – which was the beginning of a long road of hard work, dedication and ultimately success in Ski Cross.
As Joe continued to excel, at the age of 14, he joined the Green Mountain Valley School to begin a more rigorous training program that prepared him for the competitions ahead.
Fast forward to Joe’s enlightening years of college at Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT, not only did he focus on his studies, Joe was invited to join the 2007 World University Games Team and competed in the 2008 NCAA Ski Championships.
In 2011, Joe started competing in Ski Cross events and quickly became a recognized competitor in the sport. A year later, he moved into the top 30 on the World Cup Circuit and finished the year 22nd overall in the world. Over this past summer Joe was signed as a Killington Resort Sponsored Athlete and trained in Oregon and Switzerland to prepare for the upcoming season and is hoping this year’s competitions will score him a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team.
All that hard work over the summer truly paid off, and Joe’s season has been full of success.
