Thanksgiving at the Beast :: Update from Jeff Temple, Director of Mountain Operations

Time to put the hammers down…
What an exciting start to the season! We’re skiing top to bottom across a number of mountain areas and the completion of the new Killington Peak Lodge is in sight. The Peak, with spectacular views and comfortable atmosphere, will be the place to hang out with its Grand Opening by Christmas.
The construction crews have moved our Ledgewood Yurt so that you can now enjoy a ski in / ski out experience during the day, as well as the sleigh ride and five course dinners at night. We’ve added a new heated load area at the K-1 Express Gondola, a display of all resort lifts and their status and new outside water fountains at both the K-1 Gondola’s load area and the mid-station of the Skyeship Gondola.
Trail and Snowmaking Strategy
Terrain continues to open at a fast pace as we power the snowmaking system to take full advantage of every window of good weather. The exhilaration of seeing hundreds of guns making snow across Skye Peak, Snowdon Mountain, Killington Peak and now the lower mountain is just Beastly! With many hours spent in our snow plan room and great focus by our snowmakers out on the trails, our expansion strategy has worked well. You’ll see the resulting depth, quality and acres of terrain top to bottom, with wall to wall coverage on all open areas, and exceeding expectations!
Expansion continued this week on Snowdon and North Ridge with Highline and Lower East Fall trails expected for this weekend. In addition, Lower Skyelark, Middle Chute and Lower Chute all have more snow.
The exciting news for those waiting for easier terrain to open: we’ve got Snowshed Base Lodge, Express Quad and Slope opening Saturday, November 23, 2013. With the expected cold temperatures this weekend, we will be expanding in the Ramshead area as well. This includes easier terrain on Caper, Vale and Snowplay for the Thanksgiving weekend! Our Snow Sports School staff are on duty this weekend for private instruction and childcare. Beginning Friday, November 29, 2013, we’ll be offering group and private lessons for all ages and ability levels.
How’s My Driving
We’ve worked hard this summer and fall to yet again develop a number of impactful initiatives to improve our service across the resort. Please let me know how we are doing through our info services or by direct emails. You can also follow me on Twitter.
