Bud Light Bear Mountain Mogul Challenge

This annual competition heats up on Saturday as 200 amateur bumpers take to the slopes of Outer Limits to battle it out for top honors. The top 32 men and 16 women will return to compete in a head-to-head competition on Sunday. Participants run a dual course with sudden death format; only the winners advance.

rules

  • Each participant must wear a properly fastened snow sports helmet during all event practice, inspection and competition runs.
  • All participants must fill out an Express Assumption of Risks form. If you are under 18, you will need a parent/guardian to sign your form.

Registration

Pre-registration is now open! The first 200 pre-paid registrants will be entered for competition. The entry fee is $50 and does not include a lift ticket. Discounted $35 competitor lift tickets will be available for purchase at registration on the Saturday and Sunday of competition. These tickets will only be offered to racers competing that day, and they must have already been assigned a bib.

This is an amateur event and will not be open to any USSA members or anyone who has been a member as a racer in the past five years. All competitors must check-in at the Fuel TV Lounge, 3rd floor of Bear Mountain Lodge, between 7:00 – 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2013, to pick up competition bibs.

A waiting list will start on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 7:00 a.m. at the Fuel TV Lounge for all non-registered competitors. A drawing will take place for unclaimed bibs. You must be present to enter your name and at 9:00 a.m. for the drawing of the unclaimed competitors’ bibs.

Details

On Saturday at 10:00 a.m., competitors will each have one run, starting in randomly selected order determined at the Start Order Party at Sushi Yoshi on Friday April 5, 2013. The top 32 men and 16 women will return on Sunday. Pairs of competitors will run a dual course with sudden death format until only the winners remain.

Criteria

Males and females are scored separately in each age group. Each Judge can award a maximum of five points in the following categories:

  • Turns and Line (50%): Quality and variety of well-executed turns while staying as close as possible to the fall line.
  • Air (25%): Quality of upright aerial maneuvers executed spontaneously in the fall line. Inverts are strictly prohibited.
  • Speed (25%): Speed score will be based on a male and female pacesetter’s time.

Note: The purpose of the Mogul Challenge is to recognize technical superiority and athletic ability.

Elimination Rounds

On Saturday at 10:00 a.m., competitors will each have one run, then the top 32 men and 16 women will return on Sunday to compete in a dual format at 11:00 a.m. Pairs of competitors will run a dual course with sudden death format - only the winners remain. Pairings for Sunday’s first run will be arranged tennis tournament style. Awards will be presented to the first, second, third and fourth place overall male and female winners. The 1st – 4th place winners’ names will be engraved on the Bear Mountain Mogul Challenge trophy. Each overall winner will also take a new Bern helmet and New Balance shoes home with them.

Additionally, any men or women who qualify for Sunday's finals will be entered to win a week-long trip to Momentum Ski Camp! The drawing for this grand prize will be at the Pickle Barrel Night Club during the BMMC After Party on the evening of Saturday, April 6, 2013. 

Event Tips

Parking and Access

  • Please note this is an outdoor event, be sure to wear proper footwear.
  • There is limited parking at Bear Mountain. Those who wish to drive should plan to carpool and arrive early.
  • Bear Mountain parking gates will be locked at 5:00 p.m. on Friday night.  (No Friday night set-up in respect for grooming constraints.) 
  • Tailgate set-up will commence Saturday morning upon opening of the Bear Mountain parking gates at 6:30 a.m.
  • Skiing or riding to the event from other base areas can help in avoiding traffic congestion leaving Bear Mountain after the competition. 
  • Competition ends at 4:00 p.m. and the lifts operate until 5:00 p.m.  Please plan plenty of time to ski/ride back to other base areas. 
  • Shuttles will run from 8:00 a.m. until after the event to transport guests from Snowshed Base Areas to Bear Mountain and back.

Alcohol and Consumption

  • Personal consumption is permitted. Please note it is against Vermont State Law to dispense alcohol.
  • No kegs, illegal drugs/substances will be allowed inside the event, on-snow area or in parking lots.
  • Alcohol cannot be given to minors. Evidence of this will lead to removal from the premises and possible arrest.
  • A beer garden will be available with prime viewing of the stage.
  • Only those 21 and older are permitted in the Bear Mountain bar areas.
  • Personal consumption alcohol is not permitted in base lodges or other designated food and beverage venues.

Venue Policies and Amenities

  • Please leave your animals at home, including donkeys.
  • There is limited cellular service at Bear Mountain, so plan accordingly.
  • No bonfires, fire pits or fireworks allowed.
  • Please observe Killington’s Smoking Policy by only smoking in the designated areas – Bear Mountain’s designated area is the parking lot.
  • Please clean up after yourselves. There will be two dumpsters available for post event clean-up in addition to trash cans throughout the venue.  
  • Security & Sheriffs will be present to inform guests of these tips.  
  • Following the Bear Mountain Mogul Challenge Tips is strongly suggested.

Live Music

Some of Killington’s all-time favorite bands, Radio Nashville and Garden State Radio, will be jamming out all day Saturday with a DJ spinning tracks on Sunday!
