The State of the Beast, Fall 2013
Posted October 11, 2013
As temperatures start to drop, I thought I would update you on our plans for the fall. We regained the undisputed title of “Beast of the East” with last year’s longest season on the East Coast, skiing and riding from October 13, 2012 – May 26, 2013. (Yes, we worked hard to make June but it wasn’t to be.) We have more big plans for this year – did you see the new snowmaking installed on skier’s right of lower Superstar? We’ll be able to pound that trail on the lower half from both sides!
I know everyone is getting excited for the season to get moving, so I wanted to pass on some updates on projects we’ve been working on, and to answer some of your big questions.
When will we open?
The snowmaking system is ready and our team will be on high alert for a snowmaking window. Like last year, it may be a last-minute decision based on weather patterns, so sign up for The Drift Newsletter to make sure you don’t miss it. Our website will also have the latest updates.
When will the new Peak Lodge be open?
It might be hard to believe, but we are currently on schedule. The current construction plan is to open before Christmas. There are 40-50 people working up there daily! You can see the webcam here.
What’s going on in the glades?
Everyone knows that Killington has some amazing woods, but many have become overgrown or difficult to ski because of storms. In order to improve our woods experience, we spent the summer thinning out all of the existing gladed trails (the ones currently on the map). Our crew of mountain and ski patrol staff know the woods, ski the woods and care about the woods, so don’t worry, we didn’t clear cut or cut into any of your secret spots. In fact, they’ll be better for everyone to enjoy more safely.
In addition, with the continued growth of uphill skiing (skinning), we are working on a new skinning policy, which is nearing completion; check back for more soon.
I have received a lot of feedback in the past year, and we are making a major effort to listen and do our best to make this the mountain that you call home. Please continue to let me know your thoughts. I reply to all emails – Msolimano@killington.com.
