FreeAire keeping the beverages cold at Killington

Our FreeAire Economizer Systems installed on nine of our walk-in coolers and freezers here at the resort continue to pay huge environmental rewards. The system works by tapping into the greatest source of refrigeration ever created: Winter.

The Science Channel captures Killington's FreeAire installation at the Ramshead Lodge. (killington-freeaire-installation-2)The FreeAire system uses cold outside air and new high-efficiency evaporator fan motors to chill walk-in coolers and freezers. Since the installation began in August of 2007, the FreeAire system has saved more than 140,000 kWh of electricity and eliminated more than 88 tons of CO2 emissions.

Killington was the first ski resort - and at the time of installation, one of the largest companies in Vermont - to utilize the FreeAire Economizer System.  In fact, it was considered so noteworthy that it was featured on the Discovery Channel’s Invention Nation series. Watch the segment here!

During the first year of installation of the FreeAire Economizer System during the winter of 2007/08, the beer and beverage cooler at the Bear Mountain Lodge, which used to run approximately 120 days a season, utilized free outside air the entire season to keep the beverages cold. So far this season, FreeAire has been keeping the beer cold at Bear!
