The largest ski and snowboard resort in eastern North America, Killington celebrates its 50th birthday on Dec. 13, 2008 with more than $8.4 million in on-mountain improvements, including the new Skye Peak Express, ski trails, efficiency upgrades to the world's most extensive snowmaking system and expanded environmental programs.
In addition to the new Skye Peak Express and new trail enhancements, Killington debuts The Stash, an all natural terrain park located off the shoulder of Skye Peak and accessible by the Skye Peak Express. Killington's Stash is one of only five that exist worldwide and the only one on the East Coast. Plus, a new 500-foot Magic Carpet at Snowshed improves the uphill learning experience for beginner skiers and riders in the Killington Ski and Snowboard School, and Burton Learn to Ride Programs. A new beginner trail and a more advanced trail off Skye Peak also debut for the 08/09 season.
For the 2008-09 season Killington is expanding its environmental programs to include 100 percent offset of energy use through the purchase of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) and a 20 percent increase in our Low Energy Snow gun arsenal.
Opening for business on Dec. 13, 1958 with two surface lifts and seven trails, today Killington Resort stretches across seven mountain areas, including Pico Mountain, and features 30 lifts - including three express gondolas and seven express chairs - which provide access to the highest lift-served ski terrain in Vermont at 4,241 feet off Killington Peak.
Killington Resort, including Pico Mountain, features 88 miles of diverse terrain includes 191 trails and provides skiers and riders of all ability levels a choice of wide-open groomed cruisers, narrow classic New England runs, moguls, steeps and 13 tree skiing areas. Killington's nationally recognized terrain parks at Bear Mountain offer freeskiers and riders multiple features for jibbing and jumping, including The Stash and a 430-foot long Superpipe with 18-foot walls.
Killington's elevation advantage delivers an average of 250 inches of natural snow every season and optimal temperatures to produce machine-made snow, especially during November and December, with more than 1,400 snow guns covering 600-plus of the resorts 1,000 acres of skiing and riding terrain.
Off-mountain activities including dog sledding, cross country skiing, sleigh rides, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and ice skating are combined with outstanding lodging values and more than 100 restaurants and bars, plus shopping options throughout the region, making Killington the top resort in the Northeast for après and lively evening entertainment.
The season's events calendar is jam-packed with world-class athletic competition, entertainment, parties and on-snow activities, highlighted this year by the U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix Finals March 14-16, including the Superpipe Finals and concert at Bear Mountain.
During the summer, Killington features an 18-hole championship Geoffrey Cornish designed golf course; a Kona "Groove Approved" Mountain Bike Park with more than 45 miles of trails served by the K-1 Gondola; and the Pico Mountain Adventure Center with Alpine Slides, climbing walls and mini golf.
Killington Resort is easily accessible from all major East Coast cities by plane, train and automobile. Jet Blue and codeshare partner Cape Air provide daily flights between Boston's Logan International Airport and Rutland Southern Vermont Regional Airport - a short 30 minute drive to the slopes of Killington Resort. Amtrak's Ethan Allen Express provides daily service between Rutland and New York City's Pennsylvania Station.
